STRATEGIC PLAN 2016-21

The Royal College of Art’s Strategic Plan 2016–2021 articulates a bold vision to marry creative arts and design with science, technology, engineering and medicine.  This marks a ‘step change’ for the RCA, as it applies creative insights to evidence-based science, in order to address global challenges.  Through a series of strategic interventions, the RCA is injecting and interweaving the creative arts and design with three core scientific disciplines: computer science, materials science and robotics.  In 2016, the RCA embarked upon the most transformational and substantive strategic plan in the institution’s 182-year history.  In terms of delivery, we are at the midpoint, with the steepest and most challenging ascent ahead as we expand our campus with a new £116m+ Herzog & de Meuron campus; develop and innovate our Masters portfolio and programmes, and introduce new academic disciplines in our research and teaching; offer graduate diploma programmes in the UK and internationally and create blended learning opportunities; increase research intensity and launch into new fields such as computer science, robotics and materials science.  We intend to double the number of start-up companies exiting our business incubator and grow to 3,000 postgraduate students in London.

Over the next five years, the RCA will invest a minimum £140m (including £54m from Government) in vital new systems and infrastructures.

The RCA launched GenerationRCA in January 2019.  This comprehensive capital fundraising campaign is targeted with raising £100m by 2024, to support our campus, scholarships, and faculty posts.  The RCA has a highly successful business incubator called InnovationRCA.  In 2015 a Government agency (HEFCE) report cited that the RCA had generated more university financed start-up companies than any other UK university: more than Oxbridge and Imperial College.
