The Royal College of Art is an internationally renowned postgraduate art and design institution. Founded in 1837, it is also the world’s oldest art and design university in continuous operation and the most research intensive. The RCA has been ranked by the highly regarded QS survey, as the number one art and design university in the world for the five consecutive years in which the survey has been conducted between 2015 and 2019.
The RCA is seeking to appoint a Dean of the School of Communication to provide academic leadership, vision and strategic direction for the School in relation to postgraduate education, research and knowledge exchange, and the commercial and industrial sectors, internationally.
With strong interpersonal skills and academic leadership qualities linked to strategic vision and operational delivery, the post-holder will have excellent team-building ability in order to continue to build on and develop the School of Communication at the White City campus, while strengthening connections across the Battersea and Kensington campuses.
The incoming Dean will also contribute to the College’s expanding portfolio including the new Graduate Diploma, the developing academic framework, flexible and blended learning, and a planned professional doctorate.
It is essential that the Dean is able to lead effectively and to think dynamically and entrepreneurially about the future of communication and design education within the School of Communication, and is able to align and motivate staff at all levels to achieve the College’s and School’s strategic ambitions, including in the areas of scale, flexible learning, and earned income. As a member of the RCA’s senior management team, effective and collegial strategic leadership across and on behalf of the whole organisation is a key consideration in the appointment of the Dean.
If you have an established international reputation in one of the School of Communication’s main disciplinary areas, and the ability to provide energetic leadership and professional vision in a demanding academic environment; feel you have a combination of skills and experience, acquired in both academic and professional contexts, which provide the competence to fulfill the managerial, teaching and research aspects of the role, we would be delighted to hear from you.
